(Event 2)336 Scottsdale PD ????? 1008 Scottsdale PD ?????784 Scottsdale City Water3248 Scottsdale Airport OpsThe Scottsdale Police Department made major changes to their radio
communications system in October, migrating from a single-site Motorola
trunked radio system transmitting from Thompson Peak, and joining the
Maricopa County Motorola Smartzone 800 MHz trunking radio system, which
covers the entire county with 17 tower locations. This changeover was part
of the 2001 Capital Improvements approved by the Scottsdale City Council,
with over $1,000,000 in general fund money earmarked for the project.
Although talkgroups and frequencies have changed, nearly all of the new
talkgroups remain analog, and therefore can be monitored on all TrunkTracker
scanners.
Included in this change is an adjustment of frequencies for the County's
Thompson Peak site (the major East Valley tower location). Many frequencies
previously used by the Thompson Peak site have been removed from service,
presumably for addition at other locations around the County, and the
frequencies that were previously used by the City of Scottsdale trunking
system (which no longer exists) on Thompson Peak have been added to the
County system.
The new frequency set, shown below, are the frequencies necessary to program
your TrunkTracker to monitor both Scottsdale Police and ALL Maricopa County
and other agencies (Surprise Police, etc.) that were previously on the old
Thompson Peak trunked frequencies shown on page 74 of the Southwest
Frequency Directory 6th Edition. Please note that although the frequencies
for the Thompson peak site changed, NO County (MCSO, Animal Control,
Probation, etc.) talkgroups changed. Only Scottsdale city agencies have new
talkgroups in conjunction with the system changeover.
At present time, the following frequencies are known:
851.3375 852.7125 853.3625 853.5625 853.7625
854.3375 854.5875 857.2625 857.7625 857.8625
858.7625 859.2625 859.7625 860.2375 860.2625
860.7625 860.9625
Remember that this system is Motorola Type II ("E2" on some Unidenscanners). 860.2625 is usually the Control Channel for the trunking system,
and placing this frequency in the first channel in the bank you are
programming the system into in your scanner can speed up (by a second or
two) the time necessary for your scanner to lock onto the system each time
you initially attempt to monitor it.

The City of Phoenix has recently announced that they are going to a
Motorola Type II TRS by the end of 2000 for Police, Fire, and City
Services. The frequencies have been allocated and some Talkgroups
are currently active for testing. The city has made it very clear
that they will not make the switch to digital until a fully capable
digital scanner has been produced, because they do not want to shut
out the many "wonderful and helpful scanner listeners in our city".
Thanks to Adam Goldman for the above information.
